Host your own Diaspora POD with OpenShift for free!

Ubuntu based instructions, step by step (work in progress, will add screenshots soon)

1. First create an account on OpenShift
2. Install Ruby (all steps are on local system)
   

   $ sudo apt-get install ruby-full rubygems

3. Install git
   

   $ sudo git-core

4. After you install both Ruby and Git, verify they can be accessed via the command line:
   

   $ ruby -e 'puts "Welcome to Ruby"'
   Welcome to Ruby
   $ git --version
   git version 1.7.11.1

5. With Ruby and Git correctly installed, you can now use the RubyGems package manager to install the OpenShift client tools. From a command line, run:
   

   $ sudo gem install rhc

6. After the OpenShift client tools are installed, run:
   

   $ rhc setup

7. then run below command
8. If you have none yet generate a SSH keypar: ssh-keygen.
9. Create the application:

   rhc app create diaspora \
      ruby-1.9 mysql-5.5 \
      'http://cartreflect-claytondev.rhcloud.com/reflect?github=smarterclayton/openshift-redis-cart'
   

10. If it asks you to upload your SSH key, answer yes.
11. cd diaspora to change into the new repository.
12. Run the following commands:

    git remote add upstream git://github.com/MrZYX/diaspora-openshift.git
    git fetch upstream
    git reset --hard upstream/master
    git  push -f origin master
    

13. Grab a coffee.

Configuration

Configuration is done via environment variables. To change something from the default set them via rhc env set, see rhc help env. To see what's available, read config/diaspora.yml.example.

Adding yourself as an admin

After you created an account on your new diaspora* pod, you can make yourself an admin with: rhc ssh diaspora -- '/bin/bash -c "cd $OPENSHIFT_REPO_DIR; source .openshift/diaspora_configuration; bundle exec rails runner \\"Role.add_admin(User.where(username: \'yourusername\').person)\\""'.

    the field that says SI User name. The hostname is callcentric.com and
    choose the same email address and password that you used while setting
    up your CallCentric account.
    [*] The default area code for your local US phone number is 253 but you may
    choose a different one from the drop-down. For this example, I’ll go with 425.

4. Within few minutes you will recive an email from IPKall with you US phone
    Number.

5. Download this VOIP software or set-up below settings in your VOIP device
    (The trial version is good enough for our task. Make sure that you don’t install
    any of the “optional components” like toolbars, etc. during the setup.),

    Here I will go with Empathy default client in Ubuntu.

4. Make a free test call to their customer care number 17771234567, if it
    works you are done.

    If something happen wrong double check your set-up in VOIP configuration.


That's all, now you have a free US local phone number and receive unlimited incoming calls for free! Dial your new number from your home phone, don't forgot to add +1 before the new number!

2. Right click on the downloaded file "MMMagazinesDownload.sh" and select properties from the menu.

3. Go to the permission tab and tick "Allow executing file as program" and close the window.

4. Double click on the file and select "Run in Terminal"

 5. Select the appropriate magazine and go for your tea, as per your interne speed it will automatically download all the files to your desktop in a folder with magazine name and date.

Most unforgettable prize in my life.

One of the most unforgettable day in my life was just recently when I won an internet contest for the first time in my life. The prize was a nifty t-shirt and it happened in 2012 October second week. The contest was conducted by a software company named "Code Weavers" based in US.

The contest was very simple and any one from around the world could participate, provided they had a twitter account.  All we needed to do was to follow them on twitter, and also re-tweet Code Weaver's post regarding the contest.  Apart from this, it was all luck!

I had known about this company for more than a year. Their software for running Windows applications in Linux and MAC are very famous.  Also they are one of the largest contributor to Wine FOSS software.
They selected one winner each day for a week and I followed their twitter account on the last day of the contest called "Sundays Twitter RT contest". Next day I recived a direct tweet declaring me as the winner of "Sundays Twitter RT contest". They asked me for my T-shirt size and shipping address, and I immediately provided them all these details.

The shipment arrived at my doorstep only after two full weeks of doubtful waiting via government postal service in my country as they had sent it through USPS first class mail and it costs $4.48 minimum for postage.  Here in India we get this t-shirt for just $2.5 onwards.

The t-shirt is "olive" in color with a stunning orange color "Code Weavers" logo on the left chest portion. Size of the t-shirt was a bit loose for me (I think medium sizes in India and US are different). So I gave the t-shirt to my cousin on whom the t-shirt was perfectly fit.

It's the first-time experience in my life, that I am winning and receiving a prize from outside India. Although none of my friends or family believed it when I said about this, as the shipment came in, everyone was amazed.

The most funny thing is that the t-shirt I received from USA was made in India (Indian-made T-shirt exported to US for Code Weavers, and then shipped back to India as my prize.  The shipment charges ($4.48) cost more than the cost of the t-shirt (roughly $2.5) itself!!!).

I was wondering how lucky that T-shirt might be to simply go all the way across to the United States and then fly back to its hometown, India.  Even we humans may find it harder to just visit the US!!!!
